How do I stop my laptop crashing when I use twitter?

I have a twitter but I've never actually tweeted anything because every bloody time I try to go on, my macbook freezes for a few seconds then shuts down safari. Any way of getting round this problem would be highly appreciated.
And I know you can do twitter from your phone as well but that thing's about as useful to me as a brick window, so I'd rather just be able to fix whatever problem my laptop has then just use twitter on my phone.

Is it just twitter or have you noticed any other sites or programs cause this to happen?
