Twitter question about followers?

So whenever you create a twitter, does twitter have like a set group of people that automatically follow each new account? because i got 8 followers and havent even tweeted once, so i didnt know if people were actually following me, or if it was just automatic.

What are their names? I think that sometimes you do, but it's usually obvious by their names, otherwise you've just gained followers, don't complain ;D
