Promoting your site quickly generally involves money. Though there are a few free ways that can be effective.

The best way to promote your site is simply though word of mouth. Offer a site soo good that people can't help but tell their friends about it. That's how Facebook became soo popular. (Myspace, on the other hand, lives off of negative publicity).

Another way is to do "affiliate advertising". If you can't pay to put your ads on other sites, than trade instead - one website owner puts your ad in their advertisement cycle, and you put their ad in your cycle. If you do this with several sites, that will increase traffic to your site, and traffic to their sites also increase.

The hard part with affiliate advertising is - you need to affiliate with similar sites, but not ones that are too similar, as that will cause you to loose customers.

The third way is pretty easy - the human billboard. Wear a t shirt with your site's name and logo on it. People see it, get curious, and check it out. Simple enough.

If you do those three things, than hopefully enough traffic will start coming to your site to generate money from advertisements (btw - you'll want to put ads on your site to pay for everything). By than, you can use some of that income to use pay advertising on other sties to also increase traffic.
