control and a fraction of both gun related deaths and gun crime. Why can't the US adopt gun control similar to Canada.

Because America isn't Canada.

There are countries that allow guns and this stuff never happens. You need to be looking at a way to sniff out the crazies and say 'yeah if you think you're fit for a firearm, fuck off to Colombia or something''.

Because most American's tend to be crazy, unlike Canadians.

Canadians respect their political parties and we have a stable government and a good Prime Minister. Americans make a mockery of the political process with incompetent celebrity democrats and overly religious vulture capitalist republicans, with both sides corrupted by corporations. There's a lot of Canadian ideals the US should adopt. US politics would never pass in Canada.

Possible theories. I'm no expert, so this is just off the top of my head:

1) Taxes are higher here. Quite a bit higher. So, social services are better, education is better, and there is "free" hospital care. Therefore, there is more and better help and services available for the weakest links of society.

2) Stricter gun laws. It's just much tougher to get guns here. MUCH tougher. As well, people aren't inclined to go through all the legal hoops just for protective firearms, because the level of violent crime is MUCH lower in Canada than in the States. Much, much. I have answered questions before which required crime stats to back up this statement, so I know it to be true. Canada is not lower in all crime, but in murder, for example, the US is way way way higher.

3) History. The US became big, prosperous, and the world's super-power by instigating the most large-scale violence, using the most weapons on people, both domestically and abroad. Bad violent karma has a way of coming back to bite you.

4) Folklore. The typical American blockbuster movie has lots of guns. Heroes use guns to solve problems. Bad guys have guns, and the good guys have to have guns to battle the bad guys. Every male Hollywood icon made a name for himself by carrying and using a gun. Clint Eastwood, Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino...pretty much all of the greats. Gun violence is part of the folklore, and it's glorified, seen as cool.

5) Being a rebel, an independent thinker, acting based on your own needs and not considering the needs of others, forging ahead and doing what you want to and who gives a shitttt what others think...this is deeply ingrained in American culture more than any other.

6) Sensationalist media. American media makes superstars of all mass killers. Lots and lots of press. In Canada the media are less likely to see horrible tragedy as a way to put on a great show, to make real tragedy great entertainment under the guise of reporting. Any prospective psycho out there knows that he'll be in his media glory if he goes out and kills lots of people; he'll get far more press than any monster deserves..

Just thinking online here. I don't claim that I'm correct about all of this.

We could do that. The main difference is the guns Canadians have are hunting rifles used by the rural population to shoot deer/rats/bears/wolves. People in cities don't have handguns for self-defense. Guns should be considered TOOLS for specific jobs, not your metal penis, not your safety blanket.
