Do I need the windows product key to reboot my dell 1564 laptop?

Do I need the windows product key even though the laptop was preinstalled? Basically the product key has a few numbers and letters missing from the back of the laptop and there seem to no way to retrieve it.
Can anyone help?

If the Operating System disc is a Dell and the computer system is a Dell you should not need to input the windows key. It is imbedded into the motherboard.
