Why do people think social democracy like they have in Europe is anything close to actual socialism?

I see this assessment made all the time. But how can it be true when Europe trades on the free market with other capitalists, where there isn't social equality and where leaders still pursue wars for profit?

Just because a country is a welfare state doesn't mean its a socialist state. Discuss...

The term social democracy came out after all the stigma socialism brought with it.

You can argue for or against socialism, but a rose is still a rose no matter what you call it.

One of the basis (at least in application) for socialism is where the greatest institutional burdens are placed on the most productive members.

Also for welfare to be properly funded, socialistic policies need to be implemented.

Have you ever been?
I have, people have to pay 50% of their pay to the government.
Kids live with their parents and their parents live with their grandparents!
There are few good jobs available and the economy is very stagnant.
I do not want that here and neither should you!

I agree. Europe is still capitalist. Reforming capitalism is still capitalism.

It's a mixed system but is more socialist than the American or Australian system.

Conservatives said they are socialist so often the have change the meaning of the word. However the unintended consequent is that many people who look at Europe and like what they see, now think they support socialism or at least no longer think it is a bad thing.
