Should I talk to him, or just leave him alone?

Should I talk to him, or just leave him alone?
I'm not going to go into the details of our past for the sake of time & space - Basically, me & this guy used to talk all day, every day (for a few weeks), we flirted, but nothing serious ever came out of this. He eventually got with this other girl, and they've been very on & off for the past month or two. They're always arguing over something, and his Twitter is always about how he's depressed, upset, angry, etc.

I hate seeing him like this, because we used to be so close. When I was upset (before this girl ever came into the picture), he would always ask me what's wrong, & make sure that I was okay. The last time that he was upset, I told him to text me & we'd talk... This was maybe a 5 minute conversation, and after going through some minor details of what was wrong, he claimed that he didn't want to bother me. No matter how hard I tried to explain that he wasn't bothering me at all, he was still being rather short, so I just let it go.

Tonight, he's pretty upset again. I'd be more than willing to listen & to try to offer some advice, but I feel like it would be just like last time - he'd be short, and nothing would get through to him. I don't know what I should do... Should I try to ask what's wrong (since that's how he used to treat me), or should I just let it be & hope that he feels better soon?
