Has facebook recently steped up the amount of ads they show on their site?

Recently within the past two days, I've notice facebook seems to have more ads and they are now in odd places like in the middle of the page i.e. randwom spots in my timeline and sometimes I see "fake friend messages" on the bottom of the screen that look like friends messaging you that take you to another page. I hurt from the grape vine that it could be a virus but I don't think it is. Could this be a possible virus or is this a new way facebook is trying to place their ads?
