Explain Turow's Quote?
In “Breaking Up America,” Joseph Turow writes that target marketing

"[. . .] portends terrific things. If we can afford to pay [. . .] we will be able to receive all the news, information, and entertainment we like. [. . . ] The benefit to us individuals could have potentially harmful effects on society [. . .] [because] [c]ustomized media allow, even encourage, individuals to live in their own personally constructed worlds, separate from people and issues they don’t care about and don’t want to be bothered with. [. . . ] This kind of distancing may further exacerbate social tensions and make it harder to carry out basic democratic processes.”

Please explain the quote in parts, while applying a sociological perspective.

It means people can now seek out media that supports the views they already hold rather than expanding their horizons by getting a factually balanced reporting of the news. A right winger who watches only FOX News and a left winger who watches only MSNBC will never learn anything new. I know this because I have one of each in my extended family and their ignorance on the basics of any issue us astounding.
