Leads are a waste of money. You might as well just get out the phone book or go door to door.

In my humble opinion, I would not waste my money on purchasing leads. I have never found these to be truly worth the money or your time contacting them.

I believe your best bet is to develop a network of people that will serve to send you "referrals" not leads. One of the best ways I have found is working with a regular networking group such as BNI (Business Network International). See if there is a local chapter in your area--you should be able to google it. If there isn't one, start one. The group meets once a week for one and a half hours and can only include one from each person from each industry, i.e. one mortgage broker, one life agent, one p&c agent, one group health & benefits agent, one commercial real estate agent, one residential real estate agent, one commercial furniture sales person, one accountant, one attorney, etc. We get to know each other and each others business and we pass around qualified referrals--people who are truly interested in you not just a lead which many times can be almost the same as a cold call. I also belong to about four other networking groups that meet at least once or twice a month. Also consider a formal referral program with your existing clients.

Direct mail campaigns whether they are flyers or postcards (even when you follow up with calling them) only result in a 2% sales/close rate. Joining the Chamber of Commerce will depend on how active they are and if they are catering to small or jumbo sized businesses. And I would definitely not waste my money on print ads unless you are also putting it in small targeted publications such as a business 2 business type newsletter or the college paper, etc. Also you might want to actually try visiting businesses that you believe could use your service. Come up with actual marketing pieces, brochures, testimonial letters, etc. not just flyers to hand out--flyers say cheap, brochures say prepared for business.

Look at the clients you already have especially the ones that spend the most amount of money on your services and are most satisfied with you. How did they find out about you? What are some of their suggestions. Also consider setting up an advisory board of a few key clients. Use them to refer business, to plan new marketing campaigns, etc.

And also do not forget social networking marketing -- set up your website, use Linked In, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Also consider signing up for an e-mail newsletter service for our existing clients and other regular contact services, i.e. periodic contact cards, birthday cards, etc.

The last thing I would strongly advise you to consider is to set up an arrangement with a couple of PC Agents to cross sell their books. I hired an outside agent for a time to take care of my clients. I basically gave the agent 100% of the commission and I kept the overrides, bonuses and prizes from the sales. After my agency grew I ended up hiring two in-house agents but while it lasted working with an outside life agent was absolutely worth it. My companies appreciated the fact that I sold life for them, my clients were more loyal to our Agency because they knew that we could take care of all their needs and it resulted in a higher retention. The other advantage is that it helps avoid the potential for an E & O claim. If you explain all these advantages to a couple of P & C agents, you should be able to make a similar arrangement. From your perspective it will result in a never ending cycle of qualified referrals.

I hope this information helps. Good Luck!

We create a list of businesses specifically for you and have our experienced cold callers get you leads and phone/in-person appointments. We also create E-brochures and e-mail campaigns to stay in touch with those business owners who aren't ready for a quote just yet. If you try us out we'll take good care of you ;-)
