What is social media?

Basically, I had a telephone interview and at the end of it I was told to research and find out "What is social media?" I've been looking around but none of it really sticks out it's either too long or not descriptive, if anyone can give me a not too short or not too long answer it would be appreciated, thanks.

Social media is latest news,sharing opinions on stories, etc. It's a way to interact with others on the internet or by mobile. It's very interesting. hope this helps.

Very simply defined, social media are sites covering social networks like Facebook, Google, Twitter, MySpace, Hyves and YouTube. through which we communicate with others.
