Alright my best friend is suicidal. We both went to primary school and he had lots of days off, same as high school, i left half way through year 9 and joined a public school he has just recently moved to this school aswell. He smokes weed and says he likes it because it takes the pain away, he doesnt cut but he has tryed to overdoes on panadol only because of school other than that he is on xbox 24/7 on the holidays and after school. He has told me his given up hope and just wants to die but he is scared ive talked to him as much as i can but he isn't getting better. Im scared im not sure what to do this is my best friend he is only 15. Here are some things he has said to me on facebook.

1. It's school man I just don't wanna go cause its school all the people there r awesome but school in general is making me so depressed I want to kill myself but I can't and your the only one who understands me and I need advice on what to do
That's y I wanted to buy ex not because I thought it would b fun I wanted to buy it and overdose myself

2. It's everything the work I feel like I'm in a prison the teachers the hours everything I just want to sleep and never wake up
That's y I like drugs because they take all the pain away
That's y I buy so much weed that and weeds awesome but I'm not addicted I have no craving for it I can go as long as I want without it in fact I'm not smoking anything for at least 2 weeks cause of tolerance

3. I've just given up on life bro I don't have any motivation to do anything I can't get myself out of bed in the morning Im so unhappy i just want to end it but I can't because I'm a pussy I'm to afraid to die I'm afraid of what happens after death and I'm afraid of the pain before death

4. Me : its not because your a 'pussy' its because deep down in your life you know that shit gets better
i can promise you that

That's what everyone has said to me my whole life and I believed it well guess what nothing has gotten better nothing in my life is better and I'm done believing in lies

5. My whole 15 years of existsance it's never got better I put my faith in it getting better for 15 years but it never has and never will its a cruel horrible and corrupt world we live in and I'm sick of it

The first thing to understand is that -- no matter how hard as it may be for you to admit this -- there's not much you can do in situation like this. Your friend has a serious illness and you're not a doctor.

Your options are limited to calling the police so they will commit him to a hospital and give him the kind of all purpose advice you see here on Y! A. Such as ----

When things are especially bad, take things one at a time -- a day at a time, a morning at a time, or even five minutes. A favorite movie or music can help. Many people get relief by going for a walk. Within reason, some extra food will lift your spirits, whereas alcohol, which makes depression worse, should be avoided. Don't isolate yourself. Talk with somebody, even if you don't feel like it.

Stay in touch with your feelings. When you have an unpleasant mood shift, take one or two slow, deep breaths and examine the thought that just occurred to you, in terms of its truth and its relevance to what you're doing at the moment. If you find yourself in a stressful situation, take slow, deep breaths until you're calm, then think carefully about what to do. Exercise has been shown to reduce stress. The best exercise is the kind you enjoy, and sports are especially good because of the social activity. It may also be that people with depression who tend to remain indoors benefit from increased exposure to sunlight.

Usually, people go into depression in a downward spiral of negativity in thinking and behavior, one leading to the other. Getting out of depression is an upward spiral of healthy thinking and behavior, one leading to the other. In some cases, medication plays an important part, but healthy thought and behavior are still necessary. It doesn't happen overnight, and it helps to be patient. A sense of humor is a big plus.

The most versatile treatment of all is healthy lifestyle. If you go the University of Kansas TLC website, you can read about the lifestyle program developed there. It's things we all need anyway. It's low cost and low risk. Book - The Depression Cure by therapist/researcher Dr Steve Ilardi.

You can read a cognitive therapy book to find out about it. For some people, it serves as a good treatment of itself. The best one seems to be The Feeling Good Handbook by Dr. David Burns, the book recommended most often for depression by professionals.

There is a free online therapy program called MoodGYM. It’s offered by a university.
