Mostly advertisements, you know those on the sides or popup ads etc.
maybe donations? not sure...

Social Networking sites use ads from clients to earn money. For instance, say Google wanted to share something new. They would create an ad and pay the site to post it. Facebook also uses Facebook Credits, where you pay them for credits and they use offers from partners they have to pay for.
