I can't locate my friend on facebook even though we're friends already?

I added my bf as a friend on my facebook. However, when I click on "add relationship" and I type his name, he doesn't appear. It's so strange because when he clicks on "add relationship" in his setting and types my name, I appear. Why can't I search for him?

In short, I want to show my friends that he is my boyfriend, but his profile doesn't show up when I type his name. HELP!
What settings does he need to have? What settings do I need to have?
