Social media as a marketing tool?
I'm in my second year of uni, and I have to conduct a small research project of 2000 words to help prepare me for my dissertation next year.
My aim is to investigate how social media has changed the way companies advertise
Is this too broad? Should I narrow it further to a specific social media site (eg. facebook), and I'm stuck with my objectives too.

Thanks in advance!

It's far too broad - you'd end up with some very superficial findings, when you could do something really worth having (and more interesting for you!).

Narrow it down, either to one site, or perhaps to looking at how much impact is having on, say, the 60+ age group.

First of all your topic is great. The only problem with it is that it does not comply to the Watson box- why, what, how conceptually and how practically. from the topic the reader should be able to know what your project is all about. My suggestion would be something like:

The effect of Facebook on the advertisement of soft drinks in the UK

I think that it is very broad. The better question should be how will social media continue to change in the future? For example, the past year has seen a tremendous increase in the uses of photographs. You could easily write 2000 words on how to incorporate photos in a marketing campaign. I believe that 2012 will be the year of video marketing; you can write about that. Or the future of mobile marketing. All of these topics have quite a bit of information and can be done in 2000 words.

Hope this helps.
