Black screen with white cursor usually means "my hard drive isn't working - please give me another one". Contact Dell about getting it repaired under warranty, since it is only seven months old.

Hi Dean,
My name is Krishna and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. Unfortunately, the Inspiron D620 is not compatible with Windows 8. Windows 8 comes with built in features such as secure boot, which might cause no boot issues after an upgrade.

If you want to e-mail your service tag number and shipping address, I will have a look at the warranty to see what options we have. You can reach me at Krishna_KRN@Dell.com

Regards,
Dell-Kris K
