What are these and how did they get on the computer?

Scan results found on the computer were;

I've only been on Facebook, Yahoo, government websites (such as jobcentreplus) and a college website.

Exactly what it says, Adware. You can download a remover such as Ad-Aware which will remove them, you can get it for free at:

Those are adware data-miners. You can delete them from your system with Spybot - Search and Destroy. It is a freeware program. The current version is 1.60. Just download, install, update (definition files), and run the program to purge all "nasties" from your PC.

As long as you are in the Internet and if your Computer not well protected you'll get a virus, adware, malware and spyware...

do full scan your pc/laptop from time to time

don't do it online, once you miss you'll mess-up your computer...

Turn off 'spell check' may help, as this sends keystrokes back to the server also, which may be used to 'target' advertising.

As you said, you've been on face book. I recommend avoiding any sort of toolbar, even yahoo and google.
They are the same virus and are a menace. If you have gotten it from face-book or bebo then you will eventually have antivirus warnings. Ignore them.
The second link below that tells you how to remove but DO NOT download the program. I have banned face-book and Bebo in my house because of this annoying virus. I recommend sticking to email and chat programs such as yahoo and msn.
Also run Ad-aware.
I have successfully removed zango variants from all computers in my house. You may look for me on yahoo messenger if you need help.
There is no anti-virus or other program that successfully removes zango completely. It's a manual task.

They are both low risk commercial adware. They come from commercial companies that offer you free stuff on a toolbar while they gather information anonymously. If you get such things again then do a search on the internet by putting whatever the item is called in your toolbar and pressing return or enter - such as "win32/hotbar". Alternative go to an legitimate anti virus or anti-spyware website such as Kaspersky, CA, or AVG and do a search for them there.
