Why isn't my facebook option "get notifications" working?

I'm confused about why my "get notifications" option (an option on facebook available on all friends or liked public pages. This option appears when you hover your mouse over the likes button on a public page, or the friends button on a friends page in a drop down menu) doesn't do anything when I use it. I tried looking it up, and all the pages I found about it said the same thing. That it is a useful option when you want to keep up to date with what a public page or friend is doing(status updates and new pics). So when you select the option "get notifications" on your friends or a public timeline, then you will get a notification every time the friend or public page makes a status update or adds a new picture, but when I select this option, it does nothing. I don't get any extra notifications, or anything. I checked the pages I wanted to get notifications from (the pages on which I checked the option "get notifications" and there was a bunch of new stuff (status updates, pics, etc) that for some reason I was never notified about. So I'm just wondering, is there a glitch with my facebook page? Will the extra notifications show up under the globe icon at the top left corner of my home page, or do they have a different notifications spot I don't know about? Does it just mean that I'm supposed to get extra things in my news feed about the page I choose to get notifications from? Do the extra notifications only show up in a certain list? Where can I see them? Or is this problem just a common facebook glitch??

I think maybe it just started working properly. I selected "GET NOTIFICATIONS" for several public pages weeks, maybe even months ago, and I never received a notification when they posted something. The posts showed up in my feed, but there was never a notification. Yesterday, for the first time, I started getting notifications for these pages.
