How to gain Twitter followers?

Okay, I know you're thinking I'm just another Twitter-fame hungry attention whore, but there's more too it than that.
A friend and I have a bet on, as to who can get the most followers by the end of the year. We have a set of rules:
-You can advertise your Twitter however you like as long as its legal.
-You can't buy followers.
-You can't make fake accounts and follow yourself.

Other than that we can gain followers however we like. I'm currently losing. I know it sounds stupid but I'd quite like to win xD Does anyone know anyway I can do it without breaking the rules? Thanks a bunch.

Sounds like a pointless exercise, but if you having fun thats all that counts

The more genune you are, the easier it will be for you to gain followers, so make sure you have a decent photo and a realistic Bio that makes you sound interesting (i havent read yours yet)

One fairly good way of getting followers is to follow people yourself. If they dont follow you back after a few days you can always unfollow them. Take a little time to look at people before you click follow, it will be worth it in the long run. No point in following someone who hasnt tweeted for a year. They wont be coming on to twitter to follow you back.

There are several tools to track who you are following. I think a good one is called twit cleaner, or twit clean up. It analyses who you are following and tells you whether they are following you back and whether they are worth following or not. Its an excellent tool.

Another one is called Tweepi.

Also, if people follow you, follow them back. That way they are less likely to dump you. Beware of people who are just after a follow though and stop following you as soon as you follow them.

Also, try out a site called empire avenue. it takes some getting into but you will find it worthwhile.

Really, just getting followers for the sake of it is very hard work. If you have something interesting to say it will be easier.

Also, people seem to like quotes a lot. tweet some nice inspirational quotes in and among and people seem to hang onto that.
