There are many different avenues of internet advertising. There pay per click, display advertising, sponsorships, link exchanges, and grassroots marketing.

Before you begin seeking out advertising avenues, develop an advertising budget. If you don't have the funds to wage a large-scale campaign, don't panic. There are many online advertising options that are inexpensive and effective.

Link exchanges can be good, especially if your advertising budget is limited (or nonexistent). Find merchants that sell complementary products or websites that write about your subject matter, and offer to trade text links, content, or ads with them. As a cost-saving measure, you may have considered using a free online classified service to advertise your business and get noticed. Free is (usually) great, but you get what you pay for and sometimes it is not worth the time you put into setting it up.

Search keyword marketing is paid for on the basis of how many people click on your ad, so it's called cost per click, or CPC (also referred to as PPC, or pay per click). Some genius came up with the ad auction that is now the norm in search keyword marketing. Instead of picking from a fixed price list, you bid in competition with everyone else and pay based on demand for that keyword and its value to you. So some people are paying a nickel a click on a keyword that's not in much demand, while others are willing to pay fifty bucks a click. So almost every keyword has a price — and a value. It's a great way to sell as much of your inventory as possible at the best price. Clever, as long as you can make a profit!

There are other advertising methods as well: CPL (or cost per lead), where you pay for each "lead" or potential customer you get from the ad; and CPA (cost per action), with the action taken by the customer being defined variously as filling out a form or signing up for something. There is also revenue sharing, where the site carrying the ads gets a cut of any purchases made as a result of the ads.

Display advertising is when you put your banner, an image or flash, around the content of a page or in a newsletter. This can be a good way to get your product in front of people who are reading an article about your subject. The problem is that this kind of advertising is charged per impression. You have to pay per person who SAW it, not clicked, so poor creative can cost you a lot.

Grassroots marketing is promoting your product in social networking sites. Normal marketing methods do not work and are likely to get you kicked out so you have to make sure that you are bundling your product with something that these networks want. If you can crack the code, these networks will do your marketing for you. But you have to understand who uses these sites. It may not be an audience that is receptive to your messaging.

Check out the first link below, it is a video interview about the pros and cons of PPC advertising.

The answer I have for you is perfect for what you are trying to do. I found the best of the best internet marketing techniques which will show you how to promote your product with $0 investment. The technique is found in the "Who Loves Money" ebook and if you follow this guide you will learn how to do all this without spending a dime. This also lets you see if your product will sell before you invest any of your own money. Please see the link below for more details in my article.

And I kid you not, this is not a scam, I got the book myself and love it.
