Are old people living in residential care homes allowed to have their own personal computers?
And computers that have internet access, and that belong to the individual, not the home for use of everyone? Social media like Facebook, community forums, email (and Yahoo Answers) seem like they'd be ideal for the elderly who were able to use computers. Private individual computers could also store the elderly person's photos, music & letters, as well as letting them surf the net for their own interests, & stay in touch with family through Skype. So often many elderly people in homes seem to be drifting aimlessly through the day, and I do appreciate many are there precisely because they can't do much, but if they could is this something anyone could do? Or would the cost of the internet be something the elderly people would each have to meet for themselves, & if so would that be too expensive for them?

Yes. The facility I volunteer in has a wifi, so residents can access the internet with a laptop computer from anywhere in the facility. They could access it with a desktop computer also if it's equipped with a wireless card.

We are PEOPLE and grown-ups! Nobody allows us to do anything. It is our right. Please stop asking daft questions.

I do not go aimlessly thru' days and I object to you young people suggesting I do. I bet I fit more in my day than you do - don;t need xboxes - I write short stories and do 5 mile jogs most mornings. Exercise classes at the gym and meet up with friends for lunch. I go to concerts and plays - I live in London - always plenty to do.

Go away and stop depressing me.

Of course they can. They are in a nursing home, not a prison ! And if you want to know about people drifting aimlessly through the day, look at some teenagers standing around in shopping malls. Drifting !
