Background mobile data usage?

So I just got a galaxy note 2 with a 2Gb data plan. I'm really worried with my data limit because my friends are constantly complaining about going over their data limits because of background data. I've put data limits (a feature with the phone) and warnings to alert me when my data usage passes 1Gb. I restricted background data because of my paranoia and i was thinking about taking it off. can anyone tell me how much data does is used up in the 'background'? I don't have many apps that would use data, i have facebook, Skype, Instagram, and Google plus. Thx in advance

The amount of data used in the "background" varies by the app and how much it is sending or receiving. Facebook seems to be the most notorious about "background data" use.

There is an option in your phone's data settings that would allow you to turn off background data use.
