How to get many follower on twitter without using autofollow?

Just wondering since I thought my friend is using autofollow but she said she didt,and she didt want to tell me how she did that too..I think her twitter just look normal,nothing so attractive..

In my point of view I got two Ideas for you,

1. One is just search in google as "you follow and I follow", in which you will get followers and you need to follow them.

2. Apart from that best method is, you have search for your niche related followers and make conversation with them related their topics and so on, discuss about your topics too, this may help to make new followers to your twitter account.
