should I just give up trying?

Okay so my brother and I have not spoken for 12 + years I just recently found him again on facebook I'm trying to decide if I should just give up. I got a hold of him on the phone like two years ago and after a while of us not saying anything he hung up on me so I don't know what to do. We are half siblings and I feel as if he wants nothing to do with me. He hasn't added me on facebook or replied to any of my messages. But I don't really want to give up on him. I do know that as a child he was abused by his step mom so at this point I don't know what to say or how to help him. I do know he lives in California. We live in separate states so going to visit is out of the question. Please if anyone has any advice on what to do in this situation. Please Help. Oh and telling me to leave him alone is not going to work either. So at this point I don't know what to do.
