Annoying ads popping up all over Firefox now?

Just today, all these extremely annoying ads keep popping up whenever I'm on Firefox, and it's becoming a little slower too. Youtube has advertisements flashing all around the video so that it's almost unwatchable, this stupid phony Facebook friend request comes up every now and then, and all these shaking windows that say "You're the 100,000th visitor today, come claim your prize!" or "Your PC performance is poor." Also I get this ribbon across the bottom that won't go away that says "deals" and it lists a bunch of graphics cards from Newegg.com. What gives? The only thing I did before it happened was download CPU-Z from Cnet.com. (Which was probably a stupid move on my part.) Could this be a virus or some type of malware? I ran a full system scan and nothing showed up. : /

CNET downloads tend to be safe and reliable freeware. CPU-Z is not the problem. It is more likely that you have picked up numerous tracking cookies( known as data miners) and possibly some slightly more aggressive type of malware--most likely a browser exploit(s) of some kind. You probably acquired the aforementioned while visiting websites(Newegg for example) or even from a Web Search.

Delete all cookies and clear the browser cache will go a long way to solving the problem and if you believe there is active malware that is commercially based try SuperAntiSpy. It is a free malware program that is particularly good at removing commercially related problems. You WILL NOT infect your computer(further) by downloading the free version.

Download > Install > Run> Update > Scan > Remove if applicable( follow all directions. a restart of the pc will probably have to occur)


UPDATED--I do not disagree with the people who answered ahead of me. Ad-Block Plus will certainly help. The tracking cookies I mentioned will still be installed( if not removed ) so there will be continue to be issues. I recommend a malware scan if you are running a version of Windows.

You can install Adblock Plus directly from Firefox's File Menu( no need to visit a website )

Tools > Add Ons > Get Add-ons > To right of the Window select " See all" in the Up & Coming Tab > Select Privacy & Security > Place Cursor On Adblock Plus > a Green Add to Firefox Button will appear { You may also choose Asblock Plus Pop-us add-on } Click it.

Your computer is infected with Spyware... I've seen this happen many times during my time as a PC Tech... You need a spyware remover like Malwarebytes to get rid of that...

When you install, make sure you select NO to going pro... you want the Free Version which works the same
