My computer has a virus and I am not sure how to get rid of it?
Okay so I realized something was going on when everytime I clicked on one of the search results after I googled or yahooed something, it would take me to some fake advertisment thing. Say I googled "Cars" and I clicked on one of the links, it would take me to a bland page with a few links on it that would say things like, "Cars for sale 50% off" I would just press back like 150 times and then search it on Ask.com. Now the computer is running slower and this window would pop up asking if I wanted to let some random program make changes on my computer. Every time I say "No" it comes back.

I opened up the task manager to see if there was any strange processes running on my computer, and lo and behold, there was like 20 processes going to, "ctfmon.exe *32". There are actually a lot others strange ones, most have 32 in their name. I have McAffee but when I pressed "scan" it did not find any "malicious software" even though there clearly is like a billion.

Oh, and did I mention a quick time window opened up randomly and played in a raspy voice, "Ive seen the exorcist 150 times and it gets funnier EVERYTIME I SEE IT. OH AND YOUR TALKING TO A DEAD GUY YOU KNOW!" (Something like that. It sounded like an excerpt from a horror movie)

I don't even have anything valuble saved on this computer! Will these idiots just leave me alone! What are they going to do, hack my facebook account and bother my freinds!?!?!?

There's a couple things you can run to start. First, try running the following 3 programs:
-Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
-Microsoft Security Essentials
-CCleaner (Run both the cleaner and registry repair)
You should be able to do a search for these and download the free versions

If all those fail, it's time for a format. If there's nothing that's truly useful on it, you won't have to back anything up. The fewer things you carry over the better because if one of those files are infected, your computer will be infected again as well. Formatting will be like having a new computer program/file wise, so you will have to reinstall any programs that you'd like to keep going forward.

Hope this helps Smile

Hello Iamicecreamman,

To start off with "Ask.com" is home of the "Ask Toolbar"=Very much ADWARE
Your issue sounds like a browser Hijacker, but there could be more there since you have McAfee.

Tools to use in the order posted:

AdwCleaner is a program that searches for and deletes Adware, Toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser Hijackers from your computer. By using AdwCleaner you can easily remove many of these types of programs for a better user experience on your computer and while browsing the web.(FREE)

use windows restore to go back to a previous restore point (or better yet use your install disc to re-install windows)

or

run MSconfig and disable startup for any programs you dont recognize, and download/run an emergency virus removal tool (Please note Emergency removal tools can also destroy your Operating System).
