i was on google, looking at how to make smileys on facebook IM, when i clicked on a smiley picture and a virus started downloading onto my computer, i quickly exit out of the internet and then got back on a few minutes later. the virus was only up for a few seconds, could it already be on my computer?

No. Once started, downloads occur independently from the browser.

You didn't say how you knew a virus was being downloaded, so that remains a mystery.

if it looked like windows xp then it was an attempt to fool you into thinking it was a virus. dont worry your computer is safe.

I'm not sure how you know that it was a virus, but if it was, there is a chance that it was downloaded. Run a scan using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Hope this helps,

Daniel

You should have canceled the download. Simply closing your browser doesn't necessarily stop a virus from downloading (depending on your browser). Some browsers even have a download manager than stays open after you close the browser.

Do this and be sure its gone

Reboot
hold the F8 key until you get to the safe mode options
go into safe mode with networking
be patient, its slow

download rkill and run it
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download...irus/rkill
a command prompt will open and close, then a log will appear - that means its finished
if no command prompt opens, keep running it til it does

download install update malwarebytes
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download...ti-malware
let it run a scan
see if the report says it cleaned everything

restart back to normal mode
that should fix it
hope this helps

It is probably still on ur comp. Viruses don't need alot of time to download. the best way to stop them from downloading is to disconnect your internet and then click ctrl+alt+delete to open the task manager and quickly end the windows in applications. Then run a full scan on ur comp since viruses tend to hide. I just don't know how u know this is a virus that was downloading.
