Why do they say there is much power in the Internet and Social Media?

Can these be harnessed one fine day to prevent world wars,civil wars or genocides? Can they be an answer for achieving global harmony, peace and economic plenty? We know that the past 300yrs of devastating conflicts, often unnecessary and unwise, have resulted in countless loss and damage of populations and property. There seemed to be an endless cycle of destruction and rebuilding,and wasted efforts.

The importance of the Internet, or more importantly, the WWW, have been shown in the "Orange Revolution" in Ukraine, with the existence of internet, they are able to communicate quickly.
