An issue that you feel strongly about...?
Hey everyone!

So I got some holiday homework and it kinda relates to the book 'The Outsiders' by S.E.Hinton.

The task is to write about an issue or event that is very important to you. It may be on any topic but it must be from your own experience and it must be sincere. Choose an issue that you know of and feel strongly about. It must be original material.

Now the problem is that I don't have any good original ideas that I have experienced. Anyone out there who can give my realistic ideas.

Thank you in advance
Well it relates to The Outsiders because Hinton had a strong feeling about the Socs and the Greasers and also how they lived very differently.

I feel very strongly about issues of equality and equity in the world. In reference to equality, I believe everyone is created equally. And by that, I mean, that everyone, in the sight of God, is equal. There is no one more special than any other and everyone is equally special. If we all accepted this position on equality, we wouldn't have a world filled with bigotry, hate and war. Everyone wants to be treated with dignity and respect and knows from their heart that they are worthy of being loved and respected. Every human being has this inherent feeling within them, a sense of equality. Yet we can see how people are treated. They are hated for their race, their color, their religion, their sexual orientation or any other number of reasons - all of which are based on superstition and fear and loathful ignorance. Equity is the other part. What equity means, is that everyone receives their fair share so that all may have something in their lives - food, clothing, shelter, an education, a job, a reason to be alive and a reason to live. Take away a person's equity and you take away their hope, their dignitity, their self-worth, their passion for life and reason for living - not just for themselves, but for others.

It is out of disparity between us all, that wars and hatreds are bred, that peace cannot be attained and that conflict seems to be at the center of the world no matter how much we desire peace, prosperity and joy in life. This is because we have created institutions, political, economical, beaurocratical, which are inherently disfunctional. For example, our educational system strives to reward the best and punishes or allows to languish the worst or mediocre. And who is it, that deserves more help then the disadvantaged among us? Yet they are not rewarded - at most they are pittied. Pity destroys a persons dignity, self-confidence and hope - for who are any of us, that we have the right to pity? It is not pity that human beings want - they want equality and equity in the world - a chance to take their rightful place not only in society but in the world. another example, athletics - just like education, it is all about who can beat whom, who is the strongest, who is the survivor, who is the greatest and best achiever. To those individuals go untold riches, rewards and fame. But to the less skilled, the less adroit, the less coordinated, we make fun of and call them "nerds" or "lazy" or just plain "stupid." When a person can win the hundred yard dash in the Olympics, what need have they of help? It is the less fortunate that need the help to achieve what the best can achieve. How is it, then, there is so much disparity in the world...that a person who is good at hitting a golf ball into 18 holes can win millions of dollars in prizes, but a person working in an office who slaves away from day to day can barely make minimum wage and feed their family? I want you to understand something. Nothing will be right in this world EVER, until those who are less fortunate than we are, are raised up to the highest level and it should be those who are most gifted, most talented, that should do it.

God did not create life to be a struggle, a place of the haves and the have-nots. God created one sun which shines over us all, one rain cloud that rains over us all, one world where resources are distributed all over the face of the planet and not in just one spot...it is we who are missing the whole point of life and letting a handful of institutions and individuals rob all of humanity for their sake. It cannot go on like this forever - what humanity has done in the last 10,000 years cannot continue any longer. Anyone with a brain in their head can read history, repleat with repeated mistakes and failures and ask this question: As a result of our thinking and our methods, is the human race better today then it was then? That is what each and every human being has to ask. And every institution has to respond to. Human equality and equity are important and so long as there is disparity, there will be struggle and war and violence.

I don't quite get the connection of writing an essay on something you feel strongly about and The Outsiders. But, if there is and the assignment includes that as reference? then it should be written with that in mind ... paralleling a passion of yours with a passion of one of the characters in the book.

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/outsiders/summary.html ... this is a good site with the overview to the book, its characters and analysis

As to the specific of writing about an issue or event of importance to you ... you do HAVE something that you care about. You just need to identify it. Make sure it is an issue (politics, school social issues like bullying, the impact of social media, the huge gap in class structure in the United States, American involvement in other countries, teen suicide, illegal immigrants, government deficit, etc) or an event ( the Revolutionary War, 9/11, Columbine shootings, etc)

Here are some sites that list events in the U.S.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of...es_history
http://www.usa.worldweb.com/Events/
http://people.duke.edu/~charvey/Country_...events.htm

Your stance (passion) can be for or against the topic

Then decide what your theme is gong to be .... example, My daughter just did the Patriot Pen Contest. The topic was "What I would say to the Founding Fathers". Her theme under that topic was "Individual Liberty and Equality of Opportunities".

Your Topic is "What I feel strongly About" .... Pick the Theme and stance ... "The inequality in opportunities available to the lower class in our country (theme) is oppressive. (stance)"

Then think of 3 points you are going to use to support your theme and demonstrate your 'passion' in regards to it (For or against) ... order from least to most important impact.
1. Relegated to inferior education
2. Faced with daily struggles and choices for survival that negatively impact their future opportunities
3. Creates generational welfare dependency
Find a statistic about the issue ... # effected, etc. ... google the theme "lower class facts and conditions"

Introduction now becomes ... "The inequality in opportunities available to the lower class in our country is oppressive. In the united States, (stat) live in poverty. They receive inferior education, are faced daily with unmet needs that lead many to do actions that will forever lessen their future opportunities and result in generational welfare dependency."

Use the 3 points as you thesis and the rest should flow from there. Each point becomes a topic sentence for a paragraph in the body. Research on the situation will give you support examples for each point ... like "teaching standards for poverty areas in the United States", "impact of inadequate education", "available jobs without a high school degree" "leading causes for high school drop out", crime stats for poverty areas of the United States", "unmet needs of the poor", "gang activity in poor neighborhoods", "generational welfare figures", "teen pregnancy rates of the poor verses other classes", "impact of teen motherhood on future employment", "cost of welfare to the United States budget" etc

Conclude it using the thesis points ... Without a good education many citizens make decisions for survival that leave their background records unacceptable to many hiring agents for good paying jobs and results in generational welfare dependency. The cost to those oppressed in the web of poverty is not borne by them alone, our society in general pays the cost through the impact of crime and taxes. If we don't find an effective way to actually turn situation for these individuals it will only get worse.

Whatever theme you take you should be able to apply the same format and research to complete the paper.

If you have issues in general on how to format an essay, google "essay graphics and writing" and you will find a lot of available resources.
