how can i advertise my web site for free?

ok, i finally got a web site up and running, now i was wanting to know the best and cheapest way to advertise. i have done web searches for free ads, of course non of them are free! if i'm going to have to pay i need it cheap. i have spent so much money out and still have a couple months before i get a return. ive looked at similar questions on yahoo answers and none seem to be very helpful. please help!

In case you don't already know, major search engines like Yahoo! and Google will automatically include your web site as part of their search. You can submit an official submission form, but it's not necessary. They actively looking for new websites to add everyday. As for advertising, don't forget doing the small things like including your web address on your business cards.

As another answerer said, you should definitely put your website on Google and Yahoo search engines. Also, if you use the Internet a lot or participate in forums / blogs, then put your website everywhere, like in signatures and profiles and such.

Depending on what type of website you manage, find sites related to it and contact their webmasters. No matter how expensive the advertising is, it won't matter if you manage a political blog and your ads are on a Disney website or something.

You're obviously right in that there's very little opportunity to advertise with banners and flashy ads for free, but you can still notify people about your website via flyers, mentioning it to your friends, posting it on your Facebook / MySpace (if you have something like that), etc.

Here's what I recommend if you're on a limited budget.

1. Write a press release about your website, the business, and service or product you specialize in. Submit it for free:

2. Place some free classified ads online using the list below:

3. If you haven't done so yet purchase some promotional products like business cards, magnetic business cards, promotional pens, anything that you can pick up for a low cost and imprint them with your business name and website. Then leave them everywhere you go - pass them out. Pens seem to work best as everyone uses pens.

As you have already discovered, "FREE", takes a bit of effort when advertising a web site!

There is always offline advertising when you blanket your area with business cards, flyers, notices, etc.

Then there is online advertising where you have several options... BUT- I know you probably don't want to hear this- it is best to develop a campaign and use them all.

Here are some good strategies- (I know, it does look daunting but keep your chin up! You know you can do this! It just takes a bit of time and patience.):

1.) Send out a press release every few months to:

10.) Start a blog on your site then join all the blog sites.

The bottom line is that you need to generate traffic and to do that you need to get links to your URL in as many places as possible.

It does take some effort but in the long run you will reap the rewards from a stampede of visitors!
