Mostly, people go into their friend's friend list and add random people whether they know them or not. Networking, really. They may not know 2,000 people, but they'll add anyone they want. If you have any chat or IM apps on facebook, people tend to add people that they chat with. :\ Personally, I try not to add people unless I actually know them.
