What are some free antivirus and antispyware programs?

For real-time protection against malware from your children playing games, I'd recommend picking the commercial version of one of the major providers (Avast, AVG, Malwarebytes, Norton, McAfee, etc). Most of the free versions of the scanners don't give you real-time protection, which seems counter to the need that you have.

Yes, AVG and avast are the major ones in the FREE space. Both are good and I would give preference to AVG. Seems Panda antivirus is giving away it's Panda Antivirus Pro 2012 license free for 6 months. You can go for that too just in case you want to try out.
