How do I set up texting on my iPod Touch?

I got the new iPod Touch for Christmas. I have three texting applications apparently, but I don't know which numbers to use. All of my friends have theirs set up and I want to text them without getting on Facebook. I know nothing about these texting apps(:
But how do I get my number to show me what it is?

Well, each texting app has its unique number. Its like each app is 1 phone (but unlimited texting) I always liked HeyWire, Free on the app store. So you choose which app you want to use, and give your friends the number assigned to your app. Most apps will show your number when you open the app and go to settings. So when your friend texts you, it will be redirected to your app so you can text back.
