How do Facebook poke suggestions work?

Someone just poked me on facebook so I clicked on "Poke" and to the right I saw a "Poke Suggestions" widget. Two of the 5 people suggested were ex-boyfriends. I haven't spoken to either of them in years, and I never update my facebook relationship status so there is no way for FB to know I dated these guys. I also never comment, visit or do any sort of activity on either of their pages. So just wondering why they came up as my suggested pokes? Is it just random and this was just a coincidence? I was kind of creeped out. thanks.

Sometimes Facebook suggestions are random and sometimes it does it based off of people who you communicate with often.
