I would continue to focus on building up the site, the big successes, Facebook, Youtube and hopefully Twitter one day lived off investor money for years before really focusing on generating revenue.
Ads can be a slight search rank negative, the ad revenue would be negligible at the start anyway.

You really need some introductory, inspiring text at the start, your "database" would more commonly be a forum site where community shares experiences and advice. There should be some sort of ""here to help" message up front.

Generally you would have to be getting significant traffic for a company to approach you about advertising, there are countless affiliate advertising programs out there that smaller time operators can join, you do have a very specific subject matter that a small number of companies will love. Aside from the obvious pharmaceutical companies who tend to prefer to advertise on authority sites like WebMD there are the various new age, alternate medicine providers who might pay a fair percentage.
I don't know that running regular ad network ads will really be a god match for your very specific audience, being able to hand pick the affiliate product and manually placing the banner ads could have the best payoff, assume you will have to test out several advertisers to learn what actually pays best.

You might also look into CPA (Cost per action) marketing, where you are paid for specific user action leads, they are harder to get into, requiring a telephone interview due to the greater opportunities for fraud.
Just looking through some Pay per call offers, where you are assigned a unique phone number, any callers you recruit who stay on the line for a required number of minutes earns you a commission, some of the very highest paying ones include:
Stryker Hip Replacement - Pay Per Call $ 200.00 Lead
Spinal Surgery - Pay Per Call - US $ 110.00 Lead
other CPA
Legal - MeshPatchInjuryAd.com - Vaginal Mesh Implant Complications (US) $ 100.00
Health - Trimeline Flex - Arthritis Pain - Trial - Email Only (US) $ 30.00Lead
Kextin Joint Relief $ 29.50 Lead
Joint Pain Solution - Free Trial $ 27.00 Sale

Some of these offers are very specific about how you may contact the prospects, some only allowing you to promote them through an email newsletter, consider adding an email signup form on your site.
