Why wont my website rank well?
I am extremely green when it comes to computers but have made the decision to promote my small business with a website.I have only recently worked out after lots of frustration that SEO will help my site improve in the ranking with Google.
My site https://www.assistelectrical.com.au/ does not appear to be ranking with Google or any other search engine in my desired key words.
Is my only option to pay for a placement on the front page?
Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

The key to showing up on Google is to use good metadata. Use aboutus.org to make sure your site shows up well in searches, and use their tips to optimize your website.
Make sure that you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools. Until you do this, it will not be indexed. Yahoo, Ask and Bing have similar services.
Check that your site has a robots.txt file, and if it does, make sure that it isn't blocking pages from being indexed by search engines. Set up a sitemap on Webmaster Tools to help more pages be indexed.
Finally, ensure that lots of other pages link to your page. Try posting your business to contractor forums, or the Australian equivalent of Angie's List or something. Make sure you have a Yelp page (or, again, the Australian equivalent). The more linkbacks there are, the more likely it is that your site will be indexed by search engines.

Perhaps the easiest way to be could in a Local Search is having a free Google Places page, your company site ranking, places page reviews and citations on other business directories all effect the places page position, the top 7 results have A-G stick pin symbols on page 1 of the results. You must have a business address to get a places page. Having an address in so many ways helps your ranking for local search, you should proudly display your address on the business site, and always use the exactly same format wherever you show it. At one time you could just list every city you served, that may be judged as spam now. Again it's much easier to get ranking for local searches, when rte search engine knows your location as well as the searchers or they include your city in the search.
Gee finish your site!, those under construction, missing image pages and blank categories damage your ranking. Load time was a bit slow from the U.S. felt like 10 seconds or more, one study found a site with 45 sec load time got 5% 'bounce rate' people immediately exiting, 1/2 sec reduced the measured bounce to 5%, load times are a Google ranking factor (their internal design specs call for 1/2 sec load time on their properties)
Google has indexed 42 of your pages, learn some SEO techniques to gain ranking, conservative backlink acquisition is the bread and butter of SEO.
Identify a reference list of target keywords using the Google Tool
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Incorporate them in articles, maybe simple DIY, change a light bulb articles, basic diagnostic guides, power conservation tutorials, etc. to increase your value to Google users. Check ranking of your list of words periodically.
Use either the free rankchecker for firefox http://www.link-assistant.com/rank-tracker/ to generate a search ranking report for the list of keywords, the latter has some other analysis functions.
Use spyfu.com to learn the keywords and prices other electrician services are using.

You can check your site's status using free online tools like seo-status.com and figure out what you're missing. I would suggest concetrating on the kinds of quality links that gets you traffic, rpmotion and reputation all together, like- press release publishing, guest posting on other related blogs, uploading quality videos promoting your site and so on. You'll be surprised to see how many visitor you can get from one well written press release or one good instructional video

As for making your website rank well, it will take some time but you can get there. Firstly, do keyword research keeping your site and your competitors' sites in mind. Look for keywords that will bring good traffic but have low competition. Now the most important step is to incorporate these keywords into your site's content while keeping the content fresh. This must be done intelligently, don't just stuff it. Also keep updating your content, adding new, unique and interesting people-friendly content to your site. Use meta tags in your site for SEO and personalize your file and image names to the keywords. From then on, you can submit links to your site on forums, blogs, directories etc. If for any reason you can't find time for this you can always get a good affordable package from a SEO company to take care of this for you while you work on improving your site and its content. Another thing, put your physical address in the contact page of your site.

Other than that you can market your site and your business locally, by targeting local audiences in social media sites and forums. This will help get word out for your site. You can ask other local business owners to help with marketing. You can get a Google places page and also get on Yahoo yellow pages etc. The physical address will help you here too.

Hi,

Why is your site https by default? Make sure you don't have the same pages in http and https. From here (Portugal) the website seems slow (i have a good internet connection 120mbits fiber optic) and i keep getting "Internal Server Error". The speed and reliability of the hosting solution is a factor. You are targeting the australian market right? Not sure if your html lang tag shouln't be changed to en-AU, you have en-EN. You need to work on your titles to make them shine and use the keywords. Each page MUST have an h1 tag with relevant keywords, this is absolutely fundamental. Have a good mix of keywords (one or maybe two at the most) on the content of your page, use synonyms, plurals, etc. Build good internal links, with keywords in the anchor. And please get links from anthority sites related to your niche, plenty of links with good keywords variation (the keyword relevant to the page) in the anchor text.

Install seoquake firefox plugin, it will help you with the on-site seo.
