How to get a job in social media?
I want to work for a big company and help them get noticed through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. Would it be more beneficial to major in Advertising/Public Relations or Marketing (I am a freshman in college). Also, what kinds of places offer positions like this? Thanks!

Either one advertising/public Relations and Marketing are good places to start, some colleges have digital marketing degrees such as the University of Washington that focus specifically on social, seo, sem and digital marketing. The best bet out of anything is start your own blog, facebook and twitter to learn the ropes around driving traffic, engaging other bloggers and building a community.

Get as much experience as you can - in most major cities there are incubators or community work spaces where starts are formed and they're always looking for people to help market their new product or web application. Great way to get your feet wet.

Here's an infographic that I made on the daily tasks of an online community manager that might help you with what people are looking for http://www.elliottlemenager.com/2010/10/...a-manager/

I'm a community manager for Microsoft if you have any questions reach out anytime

Hi, There are a lot of freelancer sites that offer social media marketing jobs such as Odesk, Elance, Freelancer and Ajeva. Those sites help employers hire, manage , and pay remote freelancers or teams. Just sign up in any of the afore mentioned sites and browse for SMM jobs, if you have the knowledge in Social Media Marketing for sure you will get hired. Social Media Marketing is a fun job, specially for those who have a penchant for "interaction".

Goodluck!

Hi TLP. I feel your question fits right into what our company does, its rather freaky.

Our company is called 'Tiyo' and we use Social Media for Business.

Social media marketing is a recent addition to companies’ integrated marketing communications plans. Integrated marketing communications is an ideal way for organisations to follow, connect and interact with their targeted markets.

Incorporated marketing communications coordinates the elements of the promotional mix; advertising, personal selling, public relations, publicity, direct marketing, and sales promotion. Increasingly also viral marketing campaigns are grouped to integrated marketing communications. In the traditional marketing communications model, the content, frequency, timing, and medium of communications by the organization is in collaboration with an external agent, i.e. advertising agencies, marketing research firms, and public relations firms. However, the growth of social media has impacted the way societies communicate. With the emergence of Web 2.0, the internet provides a set of tools that allow people to build social and business connections, share information and work in partnership on projects online.

Social media marketing programs usually focus on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. A corporate message spreads from user to user and more meaningful because it is coming from a trusted source, as opposed to the brand or company itself.
Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Increased communication for organisations fosters brand awareness and better customer service. Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organisations to implement marketing campaigns. With development of services like ‘TiYo’, the barrier to entry in social media is greatly reduced.

Social media marketing which is known as SMO Social Media Optimization benefits organisations and individuals by providing an additional channel for customer support, a means to gain customer and competitive insight, recruitment and retention of new customers/business partners, and a method of managing their reputation online. Key factors that ensure its success are its relevance to the customer, the value it provides them with and the strength of the foundation on which it is built. A strong foundation serves as a stand or platform in which the organization can centralize its information and direct customers on its recent developments via other social media channels, such as article and press release publications.

Tiyo (This is You Online) is a service that enables users and companies to manage, receive advice on, and grow their online presence in a way that is rewarding. The company was formed in 2011 and has the strong backing and involvement of experienced social media experts who want to give the companies involved, control over their own marketing. Tiyo is focused on providing analytics and a wide diversity of potential leads for their customers, and aims to provide industry based high income individuals as well as lower income individuals.
Tiyo’s concept has been described as ‘’A Social Media Management system in a box’’. The system is being released Mid 2011 but in the meantime visit us on Facebook to learn more, when viewing us on Facebook hit the ‘Like’ button to keep informed!
