Do you need a certain plan to use a blackberry?

Right now, I have an unlimited data plan (i signed up for this while i was using an LG Xenon), but i just bought an unlocked blackberry pearl on ebay. The internet works fine but when i try to use downloaded apps (gmail, facebook etc...) it says it won't connect. Is it because i don't have a plan made specifically for a blackberry?

Yes, since you had a non smart phone you had Media Net ($15 a month) but since the Blackberry is a smart phone AT&T charges $30 instead of $15. Maybe AT&T blocks access to apps since you dont have a smart phone data plan. Or since the phone is unlocked it may not be 100% compatible with the AT&T network.
