While the jury is still out on whether a tablet can replace a laptop, it is clear that tablets can be very useful for students. Whether it’s for reading text books, using specially-designed educational apps or just consuming web and social media contact, a tablet can be a valuable part of a student’s arsenal.

If you were to analyze the differences between a student tablet and a traditional computer, you'll find the student tablet emerging as a winner in several aspects. One of these benefits is of course the portability factor. Even though a laptop computer is portable, it's definitely not as easy to bring around like the student tablet.

A student tablet can be very useful in many ways. For instance, during the lectures you can quickly write notes in your own handwriting using a stylus. Once you're at home, your tablet pc can convert your lecture notes into digital text. This means you can store them in the way you desire and refer back to them anytime you wish. Just imagine how much time this will save you!

In addition, you can use your student tablet as a reliable resource to look up information real quick; it's certainly faster than waiting for a laptop computer to load up. Your tablet pc can also function as a digital book reader by storing and annotating the books that you would otherwise have to carry along the whole day!

You will likely prefer to have a slate tablet which doesn't look too intrusive in the class. Some popular models of such flat tablets include the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy tablet. They are easy to use and can be laid flat on your lap or on a table.

As far as specifications are concerned, the first thing to look at will be the operating system. If you are an existing user of a particular operating system, for example iOS or Android, it's likely you'll want to remain on the same platform as it'll significantly cut down on the time needed to learn how to operate a new device. It's unfortunate that iOS doesn't offer any lower end option at the moment, hence it's likely to be out of the budget for most students.

On the other hand, you can find Android in a wide range of tablet pc devices. In fact the low end devices cost less than $200 and for such an affordable price, you should not expect it to be as powerful as those in the higher end scale. But there's no doubt that they can certainly still serve you well in the areas of taking notes and also connecting to the web whenever you need to get information quickly.

If you plan to use your student tablet for music and movies, it's best to go for the largest storage size which you can comfortably afford. Don't forget to look for features like SD or micro-SD slot for future expansion. Once you've decided on the operating system, check out the app stores and make sure they offer the type of apps you require.

Student tablet computers are designed to cater to people who need an easily portable device. Nonetheless the line between tablet pc and traditional computers is becoming thinner. For instance, the Asus Eee Pad can be turned into an elegant and powerful netbook computer through the use of a Transformer dock. The advantage of this is that you can use your student tablet in any way you wish - either as a tablet whenever you want a portable device or as a netbook with full size keyboard whenever you need to do a lot of typing at the desk. It's so versatile that there's really no need for you to buy two devices anymore. What's really exciting is that many tablets now have got full-sized keyboard docks.

Selecting a student tablet is not too complicated at all. Just make sure you know what your requirements are and do a little research to make sure everything will run the way you wish it to. There's no need for anything too expensive or fancy to help you benefit from the many advantages of using tablet pc at college.
