How to talk to a guy?

Okay so there is this guy that I think is really attractive. He's a Sophmore just like me but we havent had ANY classes together both this year & last year or in middle school. I really want to get to know him better but I dont know how to approach him? Oh & he just got out of a relationship 2 months ago soo.. He's really quiet & he seems serious & well he's mysterious & vain. I messaged him on Facebook saying hi but he never replied back so what do I do? I am friends with some of his friends but they arent really doing anything to help & I just want to talk to him myself. So can someone give me advice on what to do? & Dont say just go up & talk to him because I am very shy & I will not be able to do that. I would prefer a guy to answer this but 10 points for best answer(:

GuRLlll okay you tried facebook which is good lol now since you have mutaul friends ask your friend to tell or ask him to hang out with you guys after school.
