Does anybody know of a site where I can check if a phone number is safe to call eg no secret calling charges?
I often see ads on social sites where people have put their mobile numbers down and I'm afraid to call them in case it's a call back charging scam. Where can I go to check to see if these numbers are safe.
Thank B

for specific costs. you have to look the charges page of your network/phone operator
on their website, however as a quick and simple guide

01/02/03 are always charged a standard land line calls
07xxxx with the below exception (see below) are treated as mobile calls
070 . Personal Numbering - these are expensive (any 070xxx number)
076xx Pagers
079112 and 079118 - WiFi numbers

Stay with those and you will be fine.
As for the others...

08xx (including 0800 ) will be charged as a premium
(above landline and mobile) call rate
[ go figure.. when 0845/0870 is supposed to be national rate and 0800 free !]

09xx will always be expensive [up to £1.50 on a landline, forget a mobile charge !! ]
05xx which are BT Voice over IP numbers, should really be like 01/02/03 BUT are NOT included in most operators 01/02/03 call rates and treated as premium (no good reason for this, but sadly true)

Andi's right. I think you can try his suggestion.

And by the way, before you start calling, I suggest you look up these phone numbers at http://www.callercenter.com and verify if they're not posted there for scamming. You might not know it, since you really don't know these people on social network sites, some of them might just turn out to be...a scammer.
