Why does my mail account stay open on my Apple iPad?

At x-mas I got a gift of the latest Apple iPad. I set up my yahoo mail account on it signed in and when finished I signed out.The next time I opened the iPad I clicked on mail as I wanted to sign in to yahoo only to find that my mail account was already open for all the world to see !!!!!
How can I rectify this problem. Apple site is of no help to me.Can you help. PLEASE.
Very worried customer.My Yahoo account has already been accessed fraudulenty.I dont want it to happen again.
