trapster....tells you where police hide out, red light cameras, speed cameras, and live police.
Shazam is another really good one if you here a song you really like and you don't know the name it will tell you, tag it and you can download it onto your ipod

There are a ton of good, free apps out there, some just as good as paid for ones. I recently maxed the number of apps i could have to 9 pages. Most of these are not very good, but here are some.
Games:
Cube Runner
You will probably have this. If not, it's a game where you tilt your iPod from side to side to try and manuever a ship around obstacles. This game is one of the best ones.

Tap Tap Revenge 2
This is the newest (free) version of tap tap. This one has more levels and can be a lot more difficult than the first application for this, making it more entertaining.

Some other good game apps:
Time Crisis
Galcon Lite
Maze Finger
Bubblewrap (as dumb as it sounds)
Jelly Car (pretty fun, lots of levels)
Tap Defense (Tower Defense Game)
FS5 Hockey (Air hockey game, can be 2 player)
Brick Free
Blue Skies Lite(helicopter game, pretty fun)
Knots
Venger Lite
Cube (1st person shooter)
Labyrinth LE
Four Free (connect four game)
Dactyl (really fun, like defuse the bomb game)
T4Two Free
Penguin Lite
Space Deadbeef (spaceship game)
iShoot Lite
Copter
ScriBattle Lite
SinkSub Lite
Virtual Pool Lite
Tunnel (an old classic)
Trace
Chess
Sudoku

School-Related Apps
GraphCalc
(a great graphing calc)
Translator (needs internet connection, but is great for any language, translates, conjugates, and always uses the correct form for all languages, I use this instead of the computer to look up Spanish sentences)

Stanza
(lets you download books, has a ton of free ones, nice if you want to look for classics)

Units
(converts between anything that involves units like area, currency, energy, temperature, time, length, weight, speed, and so on, it also includes a ruler)

Air Sharing
(it's good for getting most types of files like word documents onto your ipod, it has nice easy directions to follow)

iProcrastinate
(one of the best homework schedule apps, really great app)

Dictionary
(just came out a little bit ago, an amazing dictionary and thesarus 250,000 words, 80,000 synonyms, no internet connection needed)

Dictionaire
(slower server, but still a good dictionary, i have both just in case one doesn't have something, still no internet needed)

Formula Free
(all different types of Math/Science formulas)

Miscellaneous
Facebook
The iBall (eight ball)
iSteam (just check it out, it's pretty cool)
iHandy Level
Mini Piano
Backgrounds (has some good pictures)
Collage
(picture sharing place, it shows pictures from other iPod touch/iPhone users and you can save them, needs internet obviously)

Auto Cue
(super cool app, you can make speeches or anything else on there and have it play it back to you at whatever speed you want, and it lets you download things off of the computer or something, you should try this one)

Coin Toss (the purpose is somewhat implied in the name)
Flip Book Lite
(cool app, also somewhat of a give-away name, you can make like 3 flipbooks with 12 slides or something, you know, like to show a ball bouncing or something)

LightSaber (just try it, it's fun to mess around with)
Cradle (an app for Newton Balls)
Wikiamo (requires internet connection, good for looking up information)
iDoodle2 Lite
(good drawing application, or try "Doodle It" another good drawing application)

Flashlight (a pretty good flashlight app)
Pandora (great app, basically pandora on the iPod touch)

iSeismo
(kinda random, but it's fun to mess around with, kinda like a seismometer, you know, a device that records earthquakes, it's pretty sensitive)

Please note:

Some of these apps may no longer exist on the app store or may have become paid-for applications. This is most likely because I have downloaded many of these months ago and there have been limited-free deals.
Hope this helps. (sorry for the amazingly long post, I can't help it as I type 110 WPM)
