Well, creating a website is quite easy but promoting it and making it a popular one is quite a difficult task. There are several methods of promoting a website.

1. Promoting on Search Engine (Search Engine Optimization). Get some professional SEO expert hired and get your website position on top ranks in Google and other search engines. When people search for specific keywords you have optimized your website for, your website will get on top. This way you will get more and more traffic.

2. Promote website on Social Networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Linked In etc.

3. Promote your website through Ad networks like Google Adsense, Adbrite etc. Here you will have to pay for every click your website link gets on other websites or Search Engines.

To get the traffic from search engine try to get backlnks for your site. The easy way to start is commenting on others people blog. Submit your site in website directory, join forums, write articles related to your website niche and submit to article directory with a linkback to your website.

And many more! all these takes time but its free. Once you get going its fun!

Have you considered social media? It can be effective, and is completely free to use.

My article, "Twitter for Marketing" is linked in the source box below. It explains how to get started, and what to (or not to) do. Hope it helps!
