Why do I see ads for my University on sites that I frequent?

I've noted a disturbing trend in the sites that I frequent. Be they about games, politcal analysis or just plain random fun, there's an ad usually somewhere for the university where I studied.

What's going on, have I been infected with an adbot or something? And how is it when I log to the site from a different account and even using a different computer, the ad is still there.

its normal. through normal cookies, flash cookies, social networking shared credentials, inter website data sharing, ip address geolocation, etc.. everybody gets targeted marketing. search for something on google and the next time you open some shopping site, there it is. the miracle of modern marketing.
