How can I shut off automatic updates on the computer?
Actually this is for my fiance. His computer which runs on Windows XP and has Norton Anti Virus installed keeps doing updates all the time and he cannot get into his things like Facebook and everything else like his emails. He has to wait and wait a long time for the updates to finish out. Is there a way to shut off the automatic updates and then just install them manually when he chooses to do so?

Yes there is a way, but you need to have administrative login ...

Just go to control panel and look for the "automatic updates" option. It should be plain sailing from there.

Ok, here is what you do
1st go to control panel
2nd go to where it says security center
3rd when you click that you should see an icon that says automatic updates click that
4th a window should come up that has options for updates, select turn off automatic updates then click ok
5th and then you are done

Hope this Helps Smile

Go to Control Panel...click on Security Center...click on Automatic udates....but i must warn you in advance...when you turn it off...Norton will give you a pop-up saying that Security Updates are turned off...also on the norton splash screen go to undates setting and there you can have them turned off...The updates comes from Live Updates which are a symantec product..

You did not mention what version of Norton Anti Virus so it is quite difficult. In general, you need to open Norton Anti Virus screen either from the program selection (e.g click "All Program" --> Symantech Client Security --> Symantech Anti Virus ) or look for it at the bottom right task bar (a security shield icon) and click on that. You should be able to see from the Norton Anti Virus screen menu a "Schedule update" or something similiar under the Configure menu. The rest of the setting is self explain.

You need to be aware that if you turn this off, you will not get up to date virus definition and your PC will be easily inffected by virus.

He should not turn off automatic updates in Norton. He should make sure he has his product key from Norton. Then uninstall Norton, and download Norton 2009, it runs very light, and the updates will not have any impact on his computer. It uses pulse updates they are fast, and light. It's that simple. Plus the new anti-virus engines on the newer version is much better. His other option is to open Norton by clicking on it, go into setting, and turn off updates. But this is a mistake, a user should always run the newest version of the anti-virus programs. Norton has really improved these last two years, and he should use the new version.
