How do people get massive amounts of followers on twitter?

You can buy followers, but twitter can catch on and penalize you. The best thing is to just start following other people and hope they start following you in return. And also get your friends and family and coworkers to follow you.

The Speed of new following is directly proportional to Total follower. (Nothing official thats just by observation)
The more your followers the fast you will gain more (Cause many people will Retweet your tweets etc).

Some people are sheeple in disguise - they like what other people like. Or, it could be that whoever they're following is providing useful information or at least entertaining - word of these get around very fast.

Like Matt G & Emma W said, some are more famous than others. Some even are more followed than celebrities. It's about the appearance of your account, what you put in it & about your personality. As I said, there are some people more popular than others. You don't have to be a celeb to be followed.

Usually the only people who reach that height are celebrities or they follow people who follow back then wait and unfollow them without them realising

Normal people can get to that height too I think but you'd have to have something to offer like being funny or having an interesting life

There are a couple of ways to get a large following. If you are interesting and you post updates which people enjoy reading then your following will rapidly increase. The other alternative is to use software to find targeted people and automatically follow them. You can do this process manually by going to the Twitter search stream (search.twitter.com) and manually add people by keyword.

This is a very effective method of building a following but it is laborious and time consuming and I'm far to busy nowadays to do that without software.

At the end of the day you have to decide why you want a large following, if it's just for your "ego" then stick to the manual method, if however you are like me and you rely on Twitter for site traffic, leads and sales then you really have no alternative but to opt for the latter.
