Why do people almost always seek out the mothers but not the fathers?

I keep reading stories here where adoptees try to or reunite with their mothers but don't even seem to try to have relationships with their fathers. Surely there's fathers out there who would like to be close to their children.
I understand needing to ask the birth mother for info on the father. However, based on many of the posts here, people look specfically for the birth mother and then have a relationship with just her. There is no mention of further searching for the father. Has no one else ever noticed that?
