How can I understand Google AdWords?
I'm a fairly web-savvy gal (I'm into social media, web 2.0 apps, open-source blogs, etc.) and a friend of mine wants me to help him with his Google AdWords business. I've read the Wikipedia article but there's too much jargon.

Can someone explain it to me like I'm a kindergartner? Bonus points for walking me through what the heck MySQL is as well.

Google AdWords is a product by Google that companies/users can sign up for. If you ever use google to do searches on the web you probably have seen it. It's all the adds that appears on the right-hand side. Companies pay to have these adds to be displayed. What determines if your add will be displayed is how related is the search topic to your key words when you set up the adword for your company. It also depends on the amount that you are willing to spend on a monthly base. The more you are willing to spend, the more likely your add will be displayed. Google will only charge you if someone actually clicks on it. Once the allocation amount have been used up for the month, your add will no longer appear until the next month.

MySQL is an open source relational database. You may have heard of Oracle and MS SQL Server. Well MySQL is the same thing except it's free. It's widely used and is free. A lot of dynamic web sites probably used it to store information. You can read more about it at http://www.mysql.com/

I've used it to put together sites for my clients like http://www.raycerbay.com

I take it your friend wants to make money using google adwords.

Step one - make a website and post it online
Step two - apply for a adsense account with google, it take a few days to go through i think.
Step three - start advertising that website, and the money should start to roll in.

I am starting it myself, I am blogging my progress to if you interested in taking a look my blog is below.
