How to remove someone off of chat on Facebook?

I just recently had a break up with my girlfriend and every time I am reminded of her it brings up emotions. I'm not going to remove her on facebook because we promised to stay in contact with each other but on facebook now on my chat bar on the side she is ALWAYS appearing there whether she is online or not it shows the phone symbol next to her name all of the time. I hate getting on facebook and seeing her name their every time and like I said I'm not going to unfriend her. I didn't know if anybody knew how to prevent people from showing up on the side chat bar or remove people from the side chat bar.
